The Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP), which is supported by the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) and Sandia National Laboratories and managed by the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA), will present a webinar later this month on a recently-commissioned energy storage project in New England. The webinar, which will be held on April 27 from 2-3:30 pm EDT, will feature Dr. Imre Gyuk, OE’s Energy Storage Program Director, Raymond Byrne of  Sandia National Laboratories, Sean Hamilton of the Sterling Municipal Light Department, and Todd Olinsky-Paul of the Clean Energy States Alliance. The Sterling (MA) Municipal Light Department’s 2-megawatt/3.9 megawatt-hour battery storage system can isolate from the main grid in the event of a power outage and, with an existing PV array, provide up to 12 days of emergency backup power to the town’s police department and emergency dispatch services. Experts at Sandia National Laboratories have prepared an economic analysis of the project including anticipated revenue and cost savings from multiple value streams including capacity reductions, transmission reductions, arbitrage, and frequency regulation.  The webinar is free, but registration is required. The Sterling project was supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, with additional financial and technical assistance from OE under the direction of Dr. Gyuk, Sandia National Laboratories, and CESA. Technical support was also provided by Clean Energy Group through a grant from Barr Foundation. Battery installation and commissioning was provided by NEC Energy Solutions.
