A new Indiegogo project is aiming to encourage girls to stand up for themselves by enabling them to fight back against societies that put them down. Slingshot Prince is a short film, written and directed by Dandelion Lin, which aims to change minds and lives.

The film takes the side of girls all over the world who are coerced into changing the way they talk, think or forced to suppress their sexual orientation. This is an ongoing problem. Every day, 160,000 children don’t go to school for fear of bullying. In the American education system, there is an incident of bullying every seven minutes, and ninety percent of LGBTQ adults report that they were bullied when they were children.

It is against this backdrop that Slingshot Prince aims to challenge attitudes. The film is set in 1995 in a small town in southern China, where a twelve-year-old Tomboy girl is treated as inferior by her family. Dressing like a boy and thinking like a man, she is the target of bullies from her school, who corner her in a dark alley and molest her. To revenge this injustice, she hunts the boys down, picking them off with her slingshot, and returns home knowing that these bullies will never torment her again.

Donating to this Indiegogo project will help to realize Dandelion Lin’s artistic vision and make Slingshot Prince a reality. This moving, exhilarating film will, in turn, give young girls everywhere the strength that they need to buck the system and fight for their rights, and will be a loud and clear call for respect from those who are proud to be different.

“Film is a powerful weapon,” says Dandelion Lin, “I will use it to change minds and open hearts.”

Dandelion Lin was originally a painter at the Fine Art program at Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in China but preferred to paint on a bigger canvas and is now in the last year of a Directing MFA program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. The director of photography for Slingshot Prince is Khoi Ly, of the Academy of Art, and it is executive produced by three-time Academy Award-winning producer Jana Sue Memel.
