Webinar December 13: Total Cost of Ownership Modeling for Stationary Fuel Cell Systems

The Fuel Cell Technologies Office will present a live webinar entitled "Total Cost of Ownership Modeling for Stationary Fuel Cell Systems" on Tuesday, December 13, from 12 to 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). In this webinar, Max Wei of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will describe a total cost of ownership model for stationary fuel cell systems (FCS). First, direct costs are estimated for proton exchange membrane (PEM) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) combined heat and power (CHP) systems from 1 to 250 kW sizes and for various manufacturing volumes. Balance of plant costs are highlighted as a larger relative portion of system costs. Second, comparisons in cost will be made to existing systems in Japan for micro-CHP and U.S. backup power systems. Learning rates of 17% are estimated for the former case in recent years and current costs from the California Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) will also be presented. Third, the methodology for externality valuation (e.g., health and environmental impacts) will be described for FCS CHP and valuation will be given for small hotels as an example. The examples will highlight the benefits of FCS CHP in certain areas of the U.S. with high carbon-intensity grid electricity.
