Speech: Commissioner Malmström on the opportunities of digital trade
Policy | Brussels, 17 November 2016
EU trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström today spoke about the promise and pitfalls of digital technology — transforming the economy with "huge" implications for global trade, and offering strong opportunities for Europe.
Speaking to an audience at the European Parliament, she outlined the Commission's work on promoting digital trade within Europe and internationally. She noted that, in the digital age, restrictions on cross-border data flows inhibit trade of all kinds, and may amount to "digital protectionism". She committed to using international trade deals as a means for setting the rules for digital trade.
