PotashCorp helps nourish student potential in Regina Catholic Schools

Regina, Saskatchewan – PotashCorp is providing $50,000 to support nutrition programs in Regina Catholic Schools this school year, bringing its total contribution since 2013 to $230,000.

“School nutrition programs are an extremely effective way to provide good, healthy food to the children who need it most. We know how important this is – our products help farmers grow crops that feed people all over the world. Improving local food security is just as critical,” said Rhonda Speiss, PotashCorp’s Community Investment Manager, who announced the funding Wednesday as she toured nutrition programs at St. Francis Community School and Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Catholic High School.

PotashCorp’s contribution helps fund nutrition workers and the cost of food for the division’s programs. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are offered to students at several schools.

The division also works with newcomer families to help them learn how to meet their nutritional needs while adapting to new, unfamiliar food choices. Outreach projects like cooking classes and community gardens are also supported.

“When children are getting the food they need, we know it’s easier for them to concentrate, so they get more out of their time in the classroom,” said Speiss. “By fueling their bodies and minds, we are growing their potential.”

“When students are well-nourished, their learning potential is so much higher. We always consider the whole child in terms of education, and this means students having access to good nutrition,” said Michele Braun, a Regina Catholic Schools Superintendent. “We are so appreciative of this blessing from PotashCorp that enables us to give our students this support. Times are challenging for many families in this economic environment, and that makes us even more grateful to PotashCorp for its commitment to helping our students.”

As the world’s largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global population rising and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such as potash, phosphates and nitrogen offer a responsible and practical solution to help produce the food we need, from the land we have.
