Cargill helps fight childhood malnutrition in Asia on World Food Day<br />



Three-month Hunger Action Season campaign will benefit more than 15,000 children across Asia through partnership with 50 organizations

SINGAPORE - Oct. 12, 2016 – Cargill is helping to take action against malnutrition in children across Asia in commemoration of World Food Day. The company has launched a three-month campaign themed ‘Hunger Action Season’ to help improve nutrition for approximately 15,000 children in Asia through employee-led activities in collaboration with 50 partners, including food banks, local schools and various local charities. Some of the activities carried out across the region include:

  • Nutrition programs and donation drive to support 300 students from 4 rural schools in Cargill community in China
  • Distribution of food packets in Singapore to support families with children and elderly in low income areas
  • Nourishing programs addressing key nutrition and food security issues in India to children in rural communities 
  • Partner with Faculty of Veterinary at University of Airlangga to hold an egg and poultry consumption campaign in Indonesia to educate the benefits of protein consumption

The campaign also aims at raising awareness about the realities of children malnutrition amongst Cargill’s more than 50,000 employees in Asia and the communities they live in.

The activities for ‘Hunger Action Season’ is in addition to Cargill’s ongoing nutrition programs including but not limited to the following:

  • Providing clean drinking water for school children in Thailand through the donation of water filter systems and dispensers to 327 schools and benefiting 92,730 students and teachers.
  • Providing food to people in crisis in Australia through Cargill’s Foodbank Grain Program and FairShare partnership. 
  • Feeding 30,000 meals to the homeless and needy through employee driven food distribution programs in Malaysia. 
  • Providing mid-day meals to over 1000 children in India through school feeding programs in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by serving daily nutritious meals. A key component of Cargill’s support is also on organizing monthly health checkup camps to monitor the health indicators of each child.

“Every year, 5.9 million children die from preventable causes, nearly half of them due to malnutrition. Half of these children live in Asia. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 490 million people suffers chronic hunger in the region, and Asia is home to almost 62 percent of the world’s undernourished. This presents the challenge of ensuring food security in the context of growing and changing patterns of food demand as the world is projected to reach more than 9 billion by 2050 and food production will have to increase by 70% to keep pace with the changing demand.
