Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to address the Official Opening of the South African Model United Nations Conference in Cape Town

Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture will address the official opening of the South African Model United Nations conference on Saturday, 15 October 2016, at the City Council in Cape Town.

The South African Model United Nations (SAMUN) project is based on the principles of the UN whilst modelling a UN General Assembly. The twinning of learners from resourced and under-resourced schools promotes cross-cultural exchange, foster social cohesion and enables learners to compete on an equal footing.

“SAMUN objectives also seek to realise what is advocated in the National Development Plan that in 2030, South Africans will be more conscious of the things they have in common than their differences. Their lived experiences will progressively undermine and cut across the divisions of race, gender, disability, space and class. The nation will be more accepting of peoples’ multiple identities”, said Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi.

The SAMUN project has been run as a dynamic project of Education Africa, in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Pretoria, Robben Island and it enjoys the participation of the Department of Basic Education and this year sees the participation of the Department of Arts and Culture.

The official opening will take place as follows:

Date: 15 October 2016 Time: 14h00 Venue: Cape Town Metropolitan Council, Western Cape

Distributed by APO on behalf of Republic of South Africa: Department of Government Communication and Information.
