PriceSmart Announces August Sales; and Fourth Quarter Earnings Release Dates; Opening of New Warehouse Club Also Announced

/EINPresswire.com/ -- PriceSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ: PSMT) today announced that for the month of August 2016 net sales decreased 1.5% to $229.1 million, from $232.7 million in August a year earlier. For the twelve months ended August 31, 2016, net sales increased 3.7% to $2,820.7 million from $2,721.1 million for the twelve months ended August 31, 2015. There were 38 warehouse clubs in operation at the end of August 2016 and 37 warehouse clubs in operation at the end of August 2015.

The Company reports comparable warehouse club sales on a "same week" basis with 13 weeks in each quarter beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday. The periods are established at the beginning of the fiscal year to provide as close a match as possible to the calendar month that is used for financial reporting purposes. This approach equalizes the number of weekend days and week days in each period for improved sales comparison, as the Company experiences higher warehouse club sales on the weekends. Approximately every five years, the Company uses a 53-week year and a six-week "August" to account for the fact that 52 weeks is only 364 days. Comparable warehouse sales reported below reflect this 53-week and six-week period reporting realignment.

For the six weeks ended September 4, 2016, comparable warehouse sales for the 36 warehouse clubs open at least 13 1/2 full months decreased 1.5% from the comparable 6 week period a year ago. For the fifty-three week period ended September 4, 2016, comparable warehouse sales decreased 0.8%, compared to the comparable fifty-three week period a year ago.

Comparable warehouse sales in the current 6 week period were not negatively impacted by the devaluation of the Colombian peso from the year ago period. However, the fifty-three week period was impacted by the devaluation of the Colombian peso. Six warehouse clubs in Colombia are in the calculation for comparable warehouse sales. Excluding those warehouse clubs, the fifty-three week comparable warehouse sales for the other 30 warehouse clubs open at least 13 1/2 full months increased 1.7%.

The Company also announced that on September 1, 2016, the Company successfully opened its new warehouse club in Chia, Colombia, bringing to 39 the total number of warehouse clubs in operation in the Company. This warehouse club is the seventh PriceSmart warehouse club in Colombia.
