Crawford Supports Silver Oxysalts™ Symposium at International Society for Burn Injury Congress

Silver Oxysalts offer a new option in the fight against Biofilms in Burns and Chronic Wounds

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., Sept. 06, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Crawford Healthcare, Inc. (“Crawford” or the “Company”) recently supported a symposium at the International Society for Burn Injuries Congress (ISBI) in Miami, FL.  The panel, composed of Surgeons and Scientists shared their insights and clinical experience in utilizing the patented silver compound Ag Oxysalts™ Technology to quickly kill bacteria and break through biofilm.

The symposium was moderated by Dr. Naiem Moiemen, FRCS (Plast), a world renown burn surgeon and the director of the ScarFree Burn Research Centre in Birmingham, UK.  Some of the panel members included Lindsay Kalan PhD, from the University of Pennsylvania department of Dermatology and Professor, Stephen Davis from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria, also known as “superbugs”, and biofilms are a growing concern in the world of medicine.  Bacteria like to live in communities and up to 60% of chronic wounds, such as pressure ulcers (otherwise known as bed sores), diabetic ulcers and venous leg ulcers have been found to be colonized with biofilms.  Dr. Kalan describes a biofilm, “as a colony of bacteria attached to the wound surface encased in a matrix.  This defense mechanism has been shown to protect bacteria from topical antimicrobials which can lead to delayed healing, poor outcomes and increased costs.”

Ag Oxysalts™ Technology, which is currently available in Crawford Healthcare’s wound contact layer, KerraContact® Ag3+ Dressing, has been shown to be one of the most effective silvers available on the market today.  Ag Oxysalts™ Technology has a unique chemistry with three missing electrons making it significantly more reactive when in contact with wound fluid and up to six times more powerful than traditional silver compounds.  The increased reactivity leads to a quick 99.999% kill of bacteria – including superbugs - and the ability to break thru biofilm to kill the bacteria within.

“We are very pleased to support the ISBI Congress and this presentation on a groundbreaking technology,” notes Terry Bromley, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Crawford’s U.S. operations. “KerraContact® Ag dressing, which makes Ag Oxysalts™ Technology available to burns and chronic wounds, helps clinicians and patients quickly see tangible benefits. We’re excited to see how it’s helping heal patients that have had wounds for years.”
