Make the Last Long Weekend of Summer a Safe One -- Drive Sober

/ -- MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are urging Canadians to leave the driving to someone sober when celebrating the Labour Day long weekend.

"The crashes, deaths and injuries we see from impaired driving are entirely preventable," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "With a little bit of planning, and with everyone looking out for one another, we can make sure this last long weekend of the summer is free from the tragic consequences of impaired driving."

More than 1,000 people are killed and 63,000 injured every year in impairment-related crashes. Summer and long weekends are peak times for impairment-related crashes. Whether you're taking one last summer road trip, taking the boat out on the lake or trekking through trails on the ATV, always drive sober.

"Mixing alcohol and/or drugs with driving can cost you," said Allstate Canada President and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Michel. "You can lose your license, lose your vehicle, or lose your freedom. Worst of all, you could cause a crash that kills or injures someone. Driving impaired is never worth the risk."

MADD Canada and Allstate Canada encourage everyone to make preparations ahead of time -- take public transportation or a cab, arrange for a designated driver or plan to stay overnight. And if you see a driver you suspect is impaired; call 911 to report him or her to police.
