MT. PLEASANT, MICH., UNITED STATES, July 29, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Author Richard Fleming takes readers back in time in a beguiling story of a tarnished hero in his historical fiction, “Wetzel.”

“When a young boy, my older brother read to me a passage from a book by Zane Grey in which Lewis Wetzel was the hero. When he told me that Wetzel was a real person, it struck a chord in me that persisted throughout my life. It took over seven years to write the story, a task that brought great enjoyment. In my research I discovered some truths that had been unknown or ignored by earlier Wetzel scholars,” Fleming says, when asked about the inspiration behind the novel.

The novel, although classified as historical fiction, traces Wetzel's life over a period of more than 20 years, featuring events and the rich history that occurred in the long war between the woodland Indian nations and the American settlers.

The story is a balanced portrait of frontier warfare that exhibits the courage and skill of the Native Americans defending their territory and the determination of the frontiersmen trying to establish homesteads.

“Lewis Wetzel was a great hero in his own day but was later regarded as something of a rogue by later historians. Fleming lets readers be acquainted with and appreciate his life in a way that historians never have,” shares Charles Callaway, Acquisitions Editor for Tate Publishing.

Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.

Fleming was born and raised on farms in the state of Iowa. He earned a degree in Education at the Northwest Missouri State University, majoring in Mathematics. After receiving a Master's and a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Florida State University, he served for 42 years as a Mathematics professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Memphis and Central Michigan University. He is retired and lives in Mt. Pleasant with his wife, Diane.
