OCHA Briefing Notes

Nigeria

·        A UN cross-border humanitarian mission from Cameroon to Nigeria yesterday provided food assistance and non-food items to 15,000 internally displaced people (IDP) in Banki, Borno State, some two kilometres from the border to Cameroon. ·        The truck convoy carried 31 tons of food and other supplies for four days. ·        The Nigerian Army is in control of Banki where civil authorities are no longer present. The army reportedly shared some food but the quantity is insufficient to meet the displaced people's needs. ·        The UN deliveries complement an intervention on 19-21 July by NGO Médecins Sans Frontières which provided nutrition and health assistance. ·        The total number of IDPs in Banki is estimated between 15,000 - 25,000 people. ·        Delivery of assistance to Banki is not possible from within Nigeria at the moment because of unsafe roads from Maiduguri, the humanitarian hub servicing Borno state.
