WHAT: On Thursday, July 21, media representatives are invited to attend
the introductory news conference of the African Bicycle
Contribution Foundation (ABCF) at Philadelphia's City Hall, wherein
reporters and guests will learn about the Foundation's mission, and
hear remarks from key board members, and from Councilwoman Jannie
Blackwell, chair of the Mayor's Commission on African and Caribbean
Immigrant Affairs.
ABCF has made a commitment to improve economic development in
Ghana, through funding the free distribution of bicycles to
students, small farmers and entrepreneurs in rural areas of that
country. The Foundation will also explore bicycle-related and other
trade opportunities between the U.S. and Ghana, and will work to
sponsor enhanced, direct, and technology-facilitated communication
between students and small business owners in the two countries.
ABCF is partnering with Ghana Bamboo Bike Initiative (GBBI) in
Kumasi, Ghana, which will manufacture the bicycles, and provide
assistance in screening and selecting the recipients.
Ms. Bernice Dapaah, founder, GBBI, will deliver remarks via video,
as will special advisor to the ABCF board, Dorothy Davis, a global
consultant on African affairs who was born in Liberia and who has
been a consultant to the U.N. Secretary General. ABCF chairman A.
Bruce Crawley and executive director Patricia Marshall-Harris will
also share insight on ways that people in the U.S. can be engaged
with the organization, as well as donate toward the cause.
