As the stars of the Kenyan Paralympics Team prepare to set off for Rio, they will visit the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi to support the Green Passport Campaign promoting responsible travel to the Rio Olympics. The team, led by Bernard Kosgei Kipng’etich - double medallist of the recent Paralympics qualifiers in Marrakesh - will meet with UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim and pledge to reduce the environmental footprint of their travel to Brazil.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are expected to generate 3.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gases, mostly from travel and the accommodation of the millions of foreign tourists expected to visit Brazil during the event.

UNEP and the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee launched the Green Passport Campaign to encourage responsible tourism by offering travel advice and promoting sustainable itineraries, products and services for the sports fans.
