Under Secretary for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon traveled to Caracas, Venezuela, June 21-23 at the request of Secretary Kerry and the invitation of the government of Venezuela. He met with President Maduro, Foreign Minister Rodriguez, civil society representatives, and opposition leaders, to discuss the challenges in Venezuela and to help foster an environment that would permit a meaningful dialogue among Venezuelans from across the political spectrum. Under Secretary Shannon and President Maduro also discussed the potential for a more constructive bilateral relationship.
