June 29 Webinar to Focus on Tribal Energy and Economic Sovereignty

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy, in partnership with Western Area Power Administration, is pleased to present a webinar titled "Tribal Clean Energy for Sovereignty and Economic Development" on Wednesday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.

According to DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Indian land represents less than 2% of the total U.S. land base but contains an estimated 5% of all U.S. renewable energy generation potential. This disproportionate wealth in renewable resources represents an untapped opportunity for tribal economic development and points to clean energy deployment as a vital pathway to economic sovereignty for tribal nations. In addition to improving economic health and quality of life in tribal communities, energy development can support stronger economies in the surrounding regions.

Attend this webinar to learn about the economic development potential and job creation benefits of clean energy projects on tribal lands from the following speakers:

  • Travis Lowder, Research Analyst, NREL—In addition to discussing how tribal clean energy projects can enhance quality of life with a focus on long-term economic benefits, Lowder will introduce free tools and models available for assessing the potential economic impacts of clean energy development.
  • Sara Drescher, Forest County Potawatomi Community (FCPC)—Drescher will highlight FCPC’s clean energy projects, including a 2-megawatt anaerobic digester and biogas generation facility that converts food waste into electricity to power 1,500 homes; discuss why her Tribe made clean energy development a priority; share long-term community energy visions and goals; and highlight the realized and anticipated economic benefits of clean energy deployment.

There is no charge to attend the webinar, but registration is required. Register for this webinar.
