Six Enforcement Orders Served on Food Businesses in February

Friday, 6 March 2015

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that five Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order were served on food businesses during the month of February for breaches of food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.  The five Closure Orders were issued by environmental health officers in the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Prohibition Order was issued by local authority veterinary inspectors in Louth County Council.

One Closure Order was served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on:

  • Curry Hut & Indian Kebab House (restaurant), 6 Lower Cork Street, Mitchelstown, Cork

Four Closure Orders were served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010 on:

  • VF Foods (cold store) (Closed area: Room 1 of the building), Jamestown Business Park, Jamestown Road, Finglas, Dublin 11
  • Shanghai House (restaurant), 13 Upper Cork Street, Mitchelstown, Cork
  • Yu Garden Chinese (restaurant), Bridge Street, Strokestown, Roscommon
  • Huahong (restaurant), Carrig House, Old Waterpark, Carrigaline, Cork

One Prohibition Order was served under the FSAI Act 1998 on:

  • Arcross Foods (cold store), Blackrock, Louth

Commenting on these latest Enforcement Orders, Dr Bernard Hegarty, Director of Service Contracts, FSAI, stated that there is absolutely no excuse for food businesses to put consumers’ health at risk through negligent practices.

“The legal onus is on food businesses to ensure at all times that the food they serve is safe to eat.  This requires ongoing compliance with food safety and hygiene legislation and there is absolutely no excuse for negligent practices.  All food businesses must have a food safety management system in place that is consulted and updated on a regular basis, in order to avoid non-compliance issues and breaches of food safety legislation.  If any food business owner is unsure of their legal requirements, they can contact the FSAI through either our Advice Line on 1890 336677, website www.fsai.ie or Facebook page.”

Details of the food businesses served with Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website.  Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premise is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
