(MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI's industrial database, manufacturers in Arizona shed 143 jobs between March 2015 and March 2016 -- less than one percent.

Arizona's 5,413 manufacturers employ 215,117 in the state, reports MNI.

"High business costs and a lack of skilled workers continue to put a dent in Arizona's industrial sector," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "However, employment has remained fairly steady since the recession, with the state's abundant natural resources and solid infrastructure drawing new manufacturers to the state."

MNI reports Arizona's transportation equipment industry remains the state's largest sector by number of jobs, employing 31,038, down one percent over the year. The second-ranked industrial machinery sector employs 27,520, 4.9% more than a year ago, while employment in third-ranked fabricated metals rose 2.4% to 25,879 jobs.

Arizona industries that shed jobs over the year included printing/publishing, down 4.4%; paper products, down 3.8%; primary metals, down 2.5%; stone/clay/glass, down 2.1%; and electronics, down 2%.

Arizona manufacturing losses were offset by employment gains in textiles/apparel, up 8.1%; rubber/plastics, up 3.8%; food products, up 3.7%; and furniture/fixtures, up 1.8%.

City data collected by MNI shows Phoenix ranks first in the state for number of manufacturing jobs, with 70,749 workers, down 3% over the year. Second-ranked Tucson accounts for 30,852, down 3.2%, while third-ranked Tempe is home to 23,799 workers, down 1.5%. Fourth-ranked Chandler accounts for 23,752 jobs, up 7.2%, and fifth-ranked Mesa is home to 12,149, up 3.9%.
