In response to the president's remarks, Paralyzed Veterans released the following statement from Executive Director Sherman Gillums, Jr.

"President Obama's recent comments reiterate what Paralyzed Veterans has been saying for quite some time -- when given a choice, veterans overwhelmingly choose the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care. When that care involves treatment or rehabilitation for complex conditions, like spinal cord injury, the only viable choice is VA. We are pleased that President Obama acknowledges that, while there are still problems that need to be addressed, veterans get the best health care in a system that understands their unique needs and has shown the ability to markedly improve when given enough resources to meet demand. Punting the problem to the private sector would be a dereliction of duty on our nation's part.
