The first round of talks between the European Union and the Philippines took place between 23 and 27 May 2016 in Brussels.
The objective was to lay the groundwork for a future free trade agreement that, once concluded, will constitute an additional building block towards a region-to-region agreement between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The ambition is to conclude an agreement that covers a broad range of issues, including tariffs, non-tariff barriers to trade, trade in services and investment, as well as trade aspects of public procurement, intellectual property, competition and sustainable development
