Youth, Students, and Educators: 20 Fulbright NEXUS Scholars from the Western Hemisphere to Present Climate Change Research Findings

On Tuesday, May 17, scholars from the Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program will discuss the results of their two-year collaborative research projects as part of a public symposium hosted by the Resilient America Roundtable at the National Academy of Sciences. The Fulbright NEXUS Program promotes international research and builds connections among scholars, professionals, and mid-career researchers across the Western Hemisphere to effectively address regional issues. The overall research focus of the 2014-2016 cohort is climate change and adaptation strategies.

Specific projects highlighted at the symposium will include: the development of climate modeling and impact assessments for El Salvador; a comparative study of the impact of climate change, including extreme weather events, on coffee farming in Mexico, Jamaica and Brazil; a study of how best to include local stakeholders in climate policy-making; and a project on increasing the sustainability of isolated micro-grid systems in South America. Panel discussions will be moderated by Dr. Danielle Nagele, an expert in disaster science and management, and Dr. Daniel Kammen, co-lead scholar of the Fulbright NEXUS Program and founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. The U.S. government’s Fulbright Program, in partnership with countries around the world, has provided more than 370,000 participants from more than 160 countries with the opportunity to gain the experiences and skills needed to solve global challenges.

The public symposium will be held on May 17 at 1:15 p.m. at the National Academy of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Ave NW, Washington, D.C.

Reporters who wish to cover the event must RSVP to ECA-Press@state.gov or (202) 632-6452. Media can arrive at 12:50 p.m. and be in place no later than 1:00 p.m.
