Tax Tip: Are you a Newcomer to Canada?

/EINPresswire.com/ -- OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 03/15/16 -- Are you a newcomer to Canada?

If you are a newcomer to Canada for all or part of a tax year, you may need to file an income tax and benefit return if you have to pay tax, want to claim a refund, or receive benefits.

Important facts

-- It's important to understand your tax obligations and the credits and
    benefits available to you.
-- You become a resident of Canada for income tax purposes when you
establish significant residential ties in Canada, such as a home in
Canada, a spouse or common-law partner who moves to Canada to live with
you, and social ties in Canada. You usually establish these ties on the
date you arrive in Canada. For more information, go to Do you have to
    file a return?
-- By filing an income tax and benefit return, you might be able to get
credits and benefits such as the goods and services tax/harmonized sales
tax (GST/HST) credit and Canada child tax benefit payments-even if you
have no income to report or tax to pay.
-- If you need help to prepare your tax return, have a modest income and a
simple tax situation, you may be able to get help from the Community
Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The CVITP is a collaboration
between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organizations
across Canada. These organizations host tax preparation clinics, and
their volunteers can prepare and submit your tax return for you free of
charge. For more information, go to www.cra.gc.ca/volunteer.
-- Everything you need to know as a newcomer is available at
www.cra.gc.ca/newcomers. You will find information on getting your
social insurance number, filing a tax return, tax treaties, and contact
    information if you need assistance.
