Nation's Largest Gathering Of Women Plastic Surgeons To Be Held In Phoenix

For and By Leading Women in the Discipline, to Share Ideas about Unique Perspectives and Challenges

CHICAGO, IL, USA, February 5, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A group of the nation’s leading women plastic and reconstructive surgeons will convene February 5-7, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ. the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) announced today. The Women Plastic Surgeons’ Enrichment Retreat will focus on networking, mentorship, and improving women’s negotiation skills.

"ASPS is committed to helping our member plastic and reconstructive surgeons thrive in today’s competitive medical climate. At this event, women who have been real pioneers in the field will share strategies for success with the younger surgeons. Young women surgeons can connect with mentors who can advise them in the future on career decision-making. We feel such mentorship is critical to young surgeons, and we are proud to present this opportunity," David H. Song, MD, MBA, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said.

Dr. Song, the first Korean-American president in the society’s 85-year history, is a renowned microsurgeon who holds an endowed chair as the Cynthia Chow Professor of Surgery. He is also the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chief of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at University of Chicago Medicine.

Also attending the meeting will be Debra Johnson, MD, currently President-Elect of ASPS. When Dr. Johnson ascends to the presidency in September, she will become the second woman to hold this position in the Society. "I’m very proud of the work ASPS does to advance plastic surgical education and patient safety. I’m equally proud of the fact that our organization celebrates our members’ diversity and their strengths," Johnson noted. Dr. Johnson has long been a trailblazer, as she was the first woman plastic surgeon to practice in Sacramento. Dr. Johnson is a partner in The Plastic Surgery Center, a group practice of plastic surgeons which has been a presence in Sacramento since the mid-1960’s. She is a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Califorinia, Davis, School of Medicine, and serves as Co-Director of the Sutter Cleft Lip, Palate, and Craniofacial Anomalies Panel. In her practice, Dr. Johnson provides both cosmetic and reconstructive surgical services, including caring for children born with facial deformities.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the world's largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, representing more than 7,000 member surgeons. ASPS is the recognized authority and information source for aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS members comprise more than 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, ASPS advances quality and safety in patient care by demanding rigorous standards in the training, ethics, and practice of its member surgeons, as well as funding both basic science and clinical research to advance the frontiers of plastic surgery.
