Finalists in the Technology of the Year include Development of 5G radio channel models – METIS project, R-Check 2015: SCA compliance testing by Reservoir Labs, and Flex Logix Technologies EFLX FPGA Core. Finalists for International Achievement are Iyad Tarazi of Federated Wireless and John Chapin of DARPA. Winners will be announced and awards presented at the Wireless Innovation Forum Conference on Communications Technologies and Software Defined Radio (WInnComm 2016), 15-17 March in Reston, Virginia.

The Technology of the Year award is presented to an individual or organization for a breakthrough product or technology in the field of Software Defined or Cognitive Radio as selected by the members. This year’s finalists are invited to provide a demonstration or poster presentation of the technology at the event expo. Finalists are:

Development of 5G radio channel models – METIS project
Because its contribution to the future development of the next-generation communications (5G) by developing a complete new set of radio channels models based on realistic end-user scenarios and requirements. These new models will enable the testing and optimization of next-generation radio devices in a very wide set of the frequency spectrum, from relatively low frequencies in the current cellular frequency bands to centimetre and millimetre wave frequencies. These models will therefore help to speed up development of the next generation of wireless technology.

R-Check 2015: SCA compliance testing – Reservoir Labs
Because its continued contribution to the field of SCA validation and compliance testing. The R-Check 2015 is an static source analysis tool tailored for Software Communications Architecture compliance testing. It allows the parsing of full ANSI C and C++ languages (including preprocessor emulation), CORBA® middleware IDL, and SCA XML descriptor files, enabling total code analysis for SCA 2.2 and 2.2.2, and incorporating initial 4.x support in the 2015 version.

EFLX FPGA - Flex Logix Technologies
Because of its contribution to achieving flexibility in radio design. The Flex Logix Technologies EFLX Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) core allows reprogramming of normally fixed functions within the FPGA. This can provide significant benefit to consumers, as there is less risk involved with making certain design decisions and modifications can be made as necessary to meet ever changing requirements.

The Forum International Achievement Award is presented to an individual, group of individuals, or organization that made especially significant contributions to international furtherance or acceptance of Software Defined or Cognitive Radio. The finalists are:

Iyad Tarazi, Federated Wireless
In the nomination, Mr. Tarazi was noted to be very instrumental in making spectrum sharing a commercial reality. Has been actively engaged with the Forum on standardization efforts and has made a huge impact in a short period of time, with more impact likely to come with the release of more spectrum expected next year.

John Chapin, DARPA
Dr. Chapin was nominated for scientific leadership in efficient use of spectrum through the DARPA Radio Map and SSPARC programs, each exploring new ways to more efficiently use spectrum.
