Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the Death of Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt

/EINPresswire.com/ -- OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/10/15 -- The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement following the death of former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt:

"It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Helmut Schmidt today. On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest condolences to his family and all the German people.

"During his tenure as Chancellor of West Germany from 1974-1982, Helmut Schmidt built closer ties among European states and across the Atlantic. He helped establish the summit of leaders which we now call the Group of Seven (G7), and which remains a vital forum for Canada and our close partners to discuss the world's most pressing issues. He stood as a model for courageous engagement in the face of intractable global challenges.

"Helmut Schmidt was a great friend to Canada, and to my father. I had the great fortune to meet him a few times when I was younger, and I will never forget the visit he made to my father's grave in St-Remi-de-Napierville in 2011.

"Canada greatly values its enduring relationship with Germany. We share with the German people their sense of loss of a great statesman."
