WASHINGTON –The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold four, two-day public hearings across the country on the proposed Clean Power Plan federal plan and model rules during the weeks of November 9 and November 16, 2015. The hearings will be held at federal buildings in Pittsburgh, Denver, Washington D.C., and Atlanta, and will provide the opportunity for interested parties to comment on the proposed actions. EPA is accepting written comments on the proposal through January 21, 2016.
At the direction of President Obama and after an unprecedented outreach effort, EPA released the Clean Power Plan, which for the first time seeks to cut carbon pollution from existing power plants, the single largest source of carbon pollution in the United States. By 2030, the plan will cut carbon pollution from the power sector by nearly a third and additional reductions will come from pollutants that can create dangerous soot and smog, translating to significant health benefits for the American people.
As part of this plan, EPA proposed model rules states can adopt, as well as a federal plan that the EPA will put in place if a state fails to submit an adequate plan.
