FuelCell Energy to Alameda County Jail with Biogas Energy
November 2015 - FuelCell Energy, a clean energy company, and the County of Alameda have agreed on a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to install a 1.4 megawatt fuel cell combined heat and power plant at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California. The fuel cell plant will convert methane from natural gas or renewable biogas into electricity and heat in a highly efficient process to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. The project will meet approximately 60 percent of the Santa Rita Jail's total baseload power demand. Excess heat from the fuel cells will be used for heating water in addition to the existing solar array and battery storage system. The PPA will facilitate upgrades of the County of Alameda's current FuelCell Energy power plant installed in 2006 to the latest generation power plant with no upfront capital cost. The new plant, to be commissioned in the second half of 2016, will avoid approximately 5,800 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
