Actress Birgit Ludemann Stars In The Upcoming Film 'Cans and Candles'
South African born actress Birgit Ludemann takes on the starring role of Brandy in Tarak Ojaghi's dramatic film "Cans and Candles."
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, October 30, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- An exceedingly talented performer across genres, actress Birgit Ludemann, who is known for her roles in the films "Fives," "Stay," "Maquisard," "Fool's Errand" and others, recently finished filming Tarak Ojaghi's upcoming film "Cans and Candles."The film follows Brandy, played by Ludemann, and Candy, played by Diana Matlak ("Red House by the Crossroads"), two lesbian partners who move from Germany to Los Angeles where they each struggle to standout in the cutthroat world that is the Hollywood entertainment industry.
While Ludemann has taken on multiple challenging and dramatic roles over the course of her career, Brandy was very different from the majority of her past characters.
"I had to delve into making the relationship of my lesbian partner realistic and show that there was substance and a history to the partnership," explains Ludemann. "The director on this project gave us a lot of freedom by trusting my co-star and I, and letting us experiment with the emotional highs and lows of the script."
As Brandy and Candy struggle to make money in order to survive, they each take very different approaches in their attempts to find success in a new country. Whereas Brandy, the logical one, has a strict sense of morality and is able to budget out the little money they do have so they are both able to continue eating, Candy has an easy-going and somewhat flighty nature, which in the end puts a strain on their relationship causing the film's main conflict.
One of the challenges Ludemann faced on "Cans and Candles" was the fact that the dialogue in the film was split between German and English.
"The German came surprisingly easy to me, as it is my mother tongue, but I've never acted in German text before. Another challenge was to get back to that needy, desperate, almost starving drive for success and survival of the fittest place of my life," says Ludemann. "I could relate to that uneasy feeling of not knowing what's going to happen next, or when the next paycheck's going to come in. As well as the foreign element of LA and not being 100% familiar with the environment."
The film, which wrapped production last month, is slated for release in March and it will begin its festival run over the course of 2016.
"Cans and Candles" director Tarak Ojaghi says, "Birgit was an asset to our set, as a professional she is impeccable and as a human being she is an example… What I loved most about her work were the surprises she would bring out in her performance. She understood her character and brought her to life brilliantly."
Born in South Africa, Ludemann's German heritage mixed with her multi-cultural upbringing gives her an ethnically ambiguous edge that allows her to take on characters from all over the world.
In addition to "Cans and Candles," the actress wrapped production on several other films this year including "Maquisard," "The Cello Player," "Fives" and "Stay," which won the Best Micro Film Award at the 20th Indie Gathering International Film Festival.
From her resume it's easy to see that Ludemann's been working as a lead actress in television and film productions non-stop for the last few years; and, while the dynamic nature of her craft and the versatility of her appearance have been key to landing roles with filmmakers that she's never worked with before, the energy she brings to the set is what has led her to be continually rehired.
Ojaghi says, "I hope I get the opportunity to work with her again soon, she is the positive energy that lights a set and most definitely brings out the positive energy in everyone else."
Ludemann has also been featured in several commercials, including those for leading skin care product Proactive, Drenched Fitness and Ticketmaster, as well as the hit television shows "Wet Hot American Summer," "You're the Worst" and "Rizzoli and Isles."
Aside from the upcoming film "Cans and Candles," audiences will be able to catch Ludemann in TLC's new reality-styled TV series "Sex in Public" in the show's fifth episode "Sex in the Park" airing Friday October 30, as well as the sixth episode "The Morning After," which airs November 6 at 10 p.m. ET.
