Eric Lefkofsky - and His Wife Liz Fund Study at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
/EINPresswire.com/ -- CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - October 27, 2015) - Eric Lefkofsky, CEO and Co-founder of Groupon, and his wife Liz have gifted $785,000 to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The funded project focuses on the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. Researchers developed a promising hypothesis on what causes the sickness to resist treatment and its possible solutions, but were still in need of funding for the study.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has long been at the forefront of medical research. Established in 1941, it was chosen as one of the original three comprehensive institutions in the United States 30 years later by the National Cancer Act. Regularly named the nation's top hospital for treatment care in yearly polls, the university now trains thousands yearly and employs nearly 20,000 individuals, while making enormous strides in the fields of medical research care, and prevention. Now, the research team led by Principal Investigator Nicholas E. Navin, Ph.D. hopes that gaining a greater understanding of triple-negative breast cancer will greatly improve the availability of successful therapies for the disease. With the donation from Eric Lefkofsky and his wife Liz, through the Lefkofsky Family Foundation, the project can move ahead.
Dr. Navin holds appointments in both the Department of Genetics and the Department of Bioinformatics and will use his unique combination of qualifications to lead a five-person team in this revolutionary study. Researchers will be attempting to understand the origin and evolution of TNBC's high resistance to existing chemotherapy treatments. By first identifying the rare cells resistant to therapy, the research will then seek to target these cells and re-sensitize them to treatment. The Foundation's gift will allow the MD Anderson Cancer Center to realize the first stage of the study without the need for time-consuming, multi-faceted fundraising efforts.
