EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström meets Georgian Deputy Prime Minister

Georgia | Brussels, 8 October 2015

Tomorrow, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will meet Mr Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia who will be in Brussels for his first official visit.

Discussions will focus on the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). The DCFTA has been provisionally applied since 1 September 2014. Since then, EU imports from Georgia have increased by 25.6% and foreign direct investment by 81% in the second quarter of 2015, compared to the same period the year before.

‘These encouraging numbers speak for themselves,’ said Commissioner Malmström. ‘The Free Trade Area has given a boost for investment and trade relations between the EU and Georgia. The EU continues to support Georgia further on its path of reform.’

Today and tomorrow Mr Kvirikashvili will also be received for bilateral meetings by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn. Discussions will cover EU-Georgia relations, visa free travel and judicial reform. Following today’s meeting between Commissioner Hahn and Deputy Prime Minister Kvirikashvili will have a press point at 12:30, live on EbS.
