Denver's City-Owned Facilities Will Be Powered by SunShare's Community Solar

July 2015 - In a partnership with SunShare, some of the City of Denver's buildings will be powered by two Denver-based community solar gardens. Under the agreement, SunShare's two community solar gardens will provide approximately 400 kilowatts (kW) of solar energy to power 16 city-owned buildings annually. SunShare is partnering with NRG Energy to build 8.2-megawatts (MW) of community solar projects in the Denver Metro area, including 1 MW of solar gardens within Denver County. The 16 buildings will remain connected to Xcel Energy's grid, but the City will receive Community Solar credits on their electric bills for those premises. The community solar project is expected to save the city $6 million over the 20-year contract period. As part of the city's 2020 Sustainability Goals, Denver is committed to doubling the power production from renewable energy associated with City facilities.
