Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, making it essential for the synthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins as well as for actions in various organs in the neuromuscular and cardiovascular systems.
Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, whole grains and grain products, fish and seafood, several vegetables, legumes, berries, banana, and some coffee and cocoa drinks. The magnesium content of tap/bottled water can make a significant contribution to intake.
EFSA estimated dietary intake of magnesium using data from the EFSA Comprehensive European Food Consumption Database and the EFSA Food Composition Database. The food consumption data was gathered from 13 dietary surveys carried out in nine EU countries, covering all age groups from infants to adults.
