WINDExchange Summit Participants Learn More about Wind Industry's Status, Successes, and Challenges

The U.S. Department of Energy's WINDExchange Summit in Orlando on May 18 provided an opportunity for the audience to learn more about the current status of the wind energy industry. The audience included members of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), national lab representatives, Regional Resource Centers, state energy officials, and professional and institutional partners.

DOE Wind and Water Power Program Manager Jose Zayas presented an overview of the Wind Vision, followed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) analyst Eric Lantz, who provided further details about state and regional aspects of the Vision. Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Alice Orrell of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Suzanne Tegen of NREL provided overviews of the latest wind industry market reports. Josh Groleau, Paul Medina, and John Obrecht of Siemens Wind Power presented technology advancements.

Lantz, Wiser, and Joe Rand of LBNL chaired an afternoon panel to discuss state and regional data in the Wind Vision. The audience also participated in several breakout sessions and had the opportunity to convene with topic experts. The closing session focused on the Clean Power Plan and state approaches.

In addition, the Energy Department's Patrick Gilman presented the annual WINDExchange awards to the following recipients:

  • Outstanding Wind Leadership in Education Award: Susan Stewart, Institutes of Energy and the Environment, Penn State
  • Outstanding Partner Award: Kylah McNabb, Renewable Energy Specialist, State Energy Office, Oklahoma Department of Commerce
  • Outstanding Leadership Award: Mary Hallisey Hunt, Strategic Energy Institute, Georgia Tech
  • Outstanding Leadership Award: Suzanne MacDonald, Community Energy Director, Island Institute
  • Novus Ventus Award: Joe Rand
