UAW Region 9 endorses Jim Kenney for Philadelphia mayor

04/28/15

Cite Kenney's integrity and commitment to working families

PHILADELPHIA – Citing Jim Kenney’s integrity and commitment to working families in Philadelphia, UAW Region 9 today, April 28, endorsed Kenney’s bid for mayor.

The primary election for the Philadelphia mayor’s race is May 19.

The endorsement brings one of the nation’s most powerful voices for working men and women to Kenney’s campaign, which is gathering a broad swath of support including the Philadelphia AFL-CIO.

“In Jim Kenney, the people of Philadelphia will have a mayor who represents all working men and women with dignity, respect and not just be their mayor – Jim Kenney will be their neighbor and advocate,” said UAW Region 9 Director, Terry Dittes.

Kenney earned his first union card at 17, the son of a Philadelphia firefighter and worked his way from South Philadelphia through college. Elected to Philadelphia City Council in 1991, he quickly earned a reputation of advocating for real living wages, funding for public education, protecting the rights of firefighters and police officers.

“If you are a worker, Jim Kenney has fought for your pay and helped you organize for better wages.  If you are a graduate or a student of Philadelphia schools, Jim Kenney has fought for your education and future. If you are a minority whether African-American or Latino, Jim Kenney has fought for your civil rights,” said Dittes. “Jim is the right candidate at the right time for working men and women and Philadelphians in all neighborhoods. UAW Region 9 could not be prouder than to endorse a candidate of his quality.”
