Trade, Sustainable Development and Human Rights in EU-Vietnam Relations - Roundtable with EU stakeholders

Vietnam Brussels, 14 April 2015

On Tuesday 12 May 2015 DG Trade will hold a roundtable in which representatives from the European institutions and from different non-state and international organisations will exchange views with interested EU stakeholders on Trade, Sustainable Development and Human Rights in EU-Vietnam Relations.

EU-Vietnam relations are being strengthened in a wide range of areas with the advance implementation of the Partnership and Co-operation Agreement (PCA), signed in June 2012, as well as with the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). These enhanced relations include issues concerning Trade and Sustainable Development as well as Human Rights.

The purpose of this event is to examine and discuss how these two areas are embedded in EU policies towards Vietnam. The general part of the event will be opened by the EU Commissioner for Trade, followed by presentations from representatives of the European Union who will provide an overview on where we stand in our political and trade relations with Vietnam, including how sustainable development and human rights are addressed.

The roundtable will consist of three consecutive panels on the areas of trade and environment, human rights and trade and social rights. Each panel will include experts on the issues from non-state and/or international organisations as well as from the European Union, who will share their perspectives and engage in a dialogue with the participants.

A summary paper of the discussion, which will take into account contributions from the participants in the roundtable, will be produced after the event with a view to supporting the EU in reflecting on the possible next steps.
