Notice of Intent: Upcoming Funding Opportunity for Next Generation of Electric Machines Projects

The Advanced Manufacturing Office intends to issue a new funding opportunity for work to develop Next Generation of Electric Machines (NGEM). NGEMs combine high power density, high RPM motors with integrated power electronics. Specifically, this upcoming FOA will facilitate efforts to integrate Medium Voltage (MV) class wide-bandgap (WBG) devices with Mega Watt (MW) range high-speed motors and demonstrate significant reductions in the volume and weight of the integrated system. WBG devices offer higher switching frequencies and junction temperatures, as well as inherent higher voltage capabilities. The purpose of this FOA is to demonstrate integrated motor/WBG devices and to reduce issues relating to their reliability, thereby accelerating the deployment and adoption of this integrated technology.

The FOA will include approximately $10-12M in DOE funding for multiple projects in the form of cooperative agreements. The period of performance for each award will be approximately 2-3 years.
