“Sketches Of Science” Exhibition Celebrates Creativity Of Nobel Laureate Scientists

Mars hosts unique photographic exhibition at UC Davis throughout January

SACRAMENTO, USA (January 27, 2015) - “Sketches of Science: Photo Sessions with Nobel Laureates” is a unique photographic exhibition featuring 50 portraits of Nobel Laureates, along with self-penned cartoons depicting their discoveries. The exhibition is hosted by Mars at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), as part of its long-standing relationship with the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.

Photographer Volker Steger asked each Nobel Laureate to draw their discovery and then photographed each of them with their drawings. The photographs were taken over a period of several years and many were shot at the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in Germany where, since 1951, excellent young scientists have been meeting with Nobel laureates for a week of sessions and social activities focusing on either chemistry, physics, physiology and medicine or economic sciences depending on the year.

An opening ceremony for the exhibition was held on Wednesday, January 7, and was attended by Nobel Laureates Bruce Beutler (physiology or medicine 2011) and Brian Kobilka (chemistry 2012). It was followed by a Wednesday, January 14, symposium with UC Davis and Mars, Incorporated to launch the joint Innovation Institute for Food and Health. Serving as the innovation arm of the World Food Center at UC Davis, the institute is designed to deliver big-impact, Silicon Valley-type breakthroughs in sustainable food, agriculture and health along the entire innovation process.

The exhibition was produced by the Nobel Museum in collaboration with the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings with principal funding by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung. The portraits and a selection of the original drawings, complemented by multimedia information, are now on display until Jan. 28 at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis.

The exhibition can be seen from 11 am to 3 pm January 6-10 and 11 am to 3 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, January 12-28, and is open to the public without charge.

For eight years, Mars, Incorporated has partnered with the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Since 2010, Mars has hosted annual panel discussions focussing on interaction with the Lindau young researchers and bringing together perspectives from the full range of scientific disciplines present at Lindau. Each year, Mars also supports young researchers to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and collaborates with Nature Publishing Group (NPG) to make the dialogue at Lindau accessible to a global scientific audience through NPG’s online and print activities.
