Request for Information Regarding the Testing of Marine and Hydrokinetic Systems
The Energy Department’s Water Power Program is seeking information from the marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on the development details of MHK systems that have the greatest potential for commercial viability. Feedback will inform the Program’s future activities and priorities to advance early to mid-stage MHK technologies.
To advance the development and deployment of innovative MHK devices and systems, the Water Power Program has invested in a broad portfolio of technology and market acceleration research. Technology investments focus on driving innovation, compressing the development cycle, and demonstrating technical readiness and performance. Additionally, the Program works to ensure that testing infrastructure is in place to accelerate MHK technology commercialization.
Through this request for information (RFI), the Water Power Program is seeking to better understand the current state of development of existing wave energy converter systems and current energy converter systems nearing one of two types of testing and validation.
- Laboratory validation: The Water Power Program is requesting information on early stage MHK systems that are ready to validate design performance, reliability, or survivability predictions in laboratory testing. The Program is also requesting information on the resources that will be needed for this laboratory testing.
- Open water validation: The Water Power Program is requesting information regarding fully integrated MHK system prototypes that are ready to be tested for performance or reliability in an open water environment. The Program is also requesting information on permitting and risk mitigation planning for these systems, as well as the resources that will be needed for this open water testing.
Responses to this Request for Information are due by February 17, 2015.
