EIA: Wind Power Capacity Additions Expected to Increase in Fourth Quarter and in 2015
Date: 12/18/2014
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released a report stating that wind power capacity additions in the first three quarters of 2014 totaled less than 2 gigawatts (GW), but project developers have reported an additional 3 GW of expected capacity additions for the fourth quarter. The developers also reported an additional 11 GW of wind projects to be completed in 2015, primarily in Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. The report stated that because of timing, the retroactive federal Production Tax Credit extension approved by the Senate on December 16 is "unlikely to spur significant additional wind development activity beyond what installers had already planned."
The EIA also released its Short-Term Energy Outlook, which states that in 2015, wind power capacity will increase by 16.2%, and electricity generation from wind is projected to contribute 4.7% of total electricity generation.
