American Lung Association Announces New Research Awards

“Research Awards Nationwide 2014-2015” Details Research Projects Funded by the Organization

Chicago, IL (November 6, 2014)

The American Lung Association’s “Research Awards Nationwide 2014-2015” report highlights lung disease research supported by the organization to meet its mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

The goal of the American Lung Association Research Portfolio is to discover effective prevention and treatment strategies as well as cures for lung disease through the support of both laboratory and patient-centered research.

This year, in connection with their LUNG FORCE campaign (www.LUNGFORCE.com) - which seeks to raise awareness, provide patient support and much needed funds to help defeat lung cancer - the Lung Association will be supporting $1.6 million on lung cancer research.  This represents a 50 percent increase in the amount of research expenditures the Association is directing to the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

The Lung Association also announced the expansion of its Asthma Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) to COPD research.  The network will continue to directly impact patient care for asthma in diverse populations, but will now be able to conduct large, simple trials examining COPD care issues as well.

“Scientific research is clearly the front-line weapon in eliminating the terrible toll of lung disease on our families and loved ones,” said Norman H. Edelman, M.D., senior scientific advisor of the American Lung Association. “Support of this research is an investment in a healthier future for Americans who are impacted by and at risk of lung disease.”

This year the American Lung Association will spend $9 million in lung disease research, supporting 85 novel and innovative research projects.  The carefully chosen research projects will focus on a wide range of complex issues to help combat and reduce the suffering and burden of lung disease – ranging from lung cancer to pulmonary fibrosis.
