New Solar Project to Supply 10% of Clarkson University's Electricity
October 2014 - In partnership with Community Energy, Clarkson University will generate 10 percent of its on-site electricity use from solar power. A 2-megawatt solar array is being built on land that the university owns near Damon Field. The array will be owned and operated by Community Energy and generate about 2.8 million kWh annually from 7,704 modules. The amount of electricity generated by solar power is equivalent to the power produced by burning 2,000 tons coal or 4,500 barrels of oil. Also, the array is expected to avoid 2,100 tons CO2. The array is partly supported by the NY-Sun Competitive PV Program, a $1 billion initiative which is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Community Energy built this array for about $5 million, $1.6 million out of which came from NYSERDA.
