Women: U.S. Department of State to Host Google+ Hangout with Ambassador Catherine M. Russell to Mark International Day of the Girl
In celebration of the third annual International Day of the Girl on October 11, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell will host her first-ever Google+ Hangout with girls from around the world on Thursday, October 9. The Google+ Hangout discussion will focus on the importance of empowering adolescent girls, including through the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence.
Ambassador Russell will be joined by Dr. Anju Malhotra, UNICEF Principal Adviser on Gender and Rights, and by actress and Girl Up Champion Monique Coleman, who will serve as moderator. The Hangout will broadcast live at 7:30 a.m., EDT on the U.S. Department of State’s YouTube channel and Google+ page. Anyone with access to Google+ or YouTube can view the hangout here. Questions from interested individuals and organizations may be submitted in advance on Google+ and Twitter by using #dayofthegirl.
The United States recognizes that empowering, educating, and investing in girls not only improves the lives of individual girls, but benefits entire communities, countries, and societies. This Google+ Hangout offers an opportunity to ensure that girls everywhere have an opportunity to voice what International Day of the Girl means to them, and will serve to inform policymakers about the concerns, aspirations, and needs of girls as the global community works toward a new Post-2015 Development Agenda.
