Four Michigan Farms to Produce 2.6 MW of Electric Capacity with Anaerobic Digesters
July 2014 - Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest utility, plans to diversify its energy supply and has selected four Michigan farms: Beaver Creek Farms, Coopersville; Brook View Dairy, Freeport; Green Meadow Farms Inc., Elsie; Scenic View Dairy, Fennville to produce renewable energy with anaerobic digesters. Consumers Energy developed the new anaerobic digester program with Michigan State University and the state's agricultural community. Through the program, anaerobic digesters would generate electricity from biodegradable material from all four farms. The farms could generate electricity under long-term contracts that collectively provide 2.6 megawatts (MW) of electric capacity, enough to power about 2,800 homes.
