Western Hemisphere: United States Dedicates New U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey, Mexico
In an important symbol of our commitment and enduring relationship with Mexico, Under Secretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy; Acting Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Michelle Bond; U.S. Ambassador to Mexico E. Anthony Wayne; Consul General Joseph M. Pomper; and Principal Deputy Director for the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Heather Townsend alongside Mexican dignitaries hosted a dedication for the new U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey today.
Situated on a 10-acre site in the Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon area, the new Consulate General includes an office building with consular functions to accommodate more than 400,000 visa applicants each year, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, and support buildings.
The $154 million project incorporates numerous sustainable features to conserve resources and reduce operating costs, including a 200 kilovolt-ampere photovoltaic array, an improved thermal envelope, high-efficiency fenestration, exterior shading devices, and daylighting controls.
The design architect is Zimmer Gunsul Frasca of Portland, Oregon and the architect of record is Karn Charuhas Chapman and Twohey of Washington, DC. The new multi-building complex, constructed by Yates-Desbuild Joint Venture of Philadelphia, Mississippi, provides employees with a safe, secure, and modern workplace.
Since 1999, as part of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has completed 113 new diplomatic facilities and has an additional 30 projects in design or under construction.
OBO’s mission is to provide safe, secure, and functional facilities that represent the U.S. government to the host nation and support our staff in the achievement of U.S. foreign policy objectives. These facilities should represent American values and the best in American architecture, engineering, technology, sustainability, art, culture, and construction execution.
