FIFAs World Cup Stadiums Partner with Renewable Choice Energy to Offset Energy Use

Renewable Choice Energy, a Boulder-Colorado-based provider of renewable energy certificates, carbon offsets, and renewable energy consulting services, has partnered with Arena Pernambuco and Estiod Beire Riowill, two of the stadiums hosting the World Cup in Brazil. In their effort to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) accreditation, the two stadiums have purchased a total of more than 10,000 MWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs) in order to offset 100% of the energy use associated with their operations. The RECs purchased by the stadiums are certified by Green-e® Energy, a U.S. certification program for renewable energy.

FIFA, the international football organization, also, plans to lessen the carbon impact of the World Cup more broadly, by offsetting over 2.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) through the purchase of verified emissions reductions (VERs) derived from local Brazilian carbon projects.
