Seligman has identified following the five leading driver’s license misconceptions that can lead to legal problems.

1. A few unpaid traffic tickets are nothing to worry about.
FACT: If you do not pay your traffic tickets in Florida, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will suspend your driver’s license indefinitely until you have paid all of your tickets.

2. Driving with a suspended license is no big deal.
FACT: Driving without a license in the state of Florida is a serious criminal offense with potentially severe consequences. If you are found guilty of driving with a suspended driver’s license three times in five years, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will classify you as a Habitual Traffic Offender and you will lose your license for five years.

3. Signing a ticket is the same as admitting you’re guilty
FACT: Signing a ticket is never viewed as an admission of guilt by the court.

4. If I’m arrested for DUI, I’m going to lose my license and there is nothing that can be done.
FACT: DUI offenders have 10 days to request a Formal Review hearing. Without a Formal Review hearing, a license will be suspended for a minimum of six months and a minimum hardship period of 30 days. Seligman recommends retaining an experienced attorney to help in such a situation.

5. I’m behind on paying court-ordered child support payments. But that doesn’t have anything to do with my driver’s license.
FACT: If you have fallen behind in court-ordered child support payments, the Florida Department of Revenue can suspend your driver's license. A qualified attorney can help you with possible remedies, including negotiating a payment plan and determining if you actually are capable of paying the total amount.
