Walmart Pledges to Double On-site Solar Projects in the U.S. by 2020

At a May 9 event with President Obama, Walmart pledged that it will double the number of on-site solar energy projects at its U.S.-based stores, Sams Clubs and distribution centers by 2020 compared to a 2013 baseline. Walmart has committed to procure 7 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy by the end of 2020. Walmarts 2020 goal to support renewable energy and implement energy efficiency practices is expected to save the company $1 billion a year in energy costs. Walmart typically employs the third-party ownership model for rooftop PV under which SolarCity owns and operates the systems, as distinguished from the host-owned model. According to SolarCity, its projects with Walmart have created an estimated 9,000 temporary construction jobs in the United States.
