MDARD issues statewide stop sale order for Ohio Mulch Company

LANSING – Today, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) issued a Stop-Use and Stop-Removal Order for the following mulch products produced by UMS of Columbus, Ohio after finding the products did not comply with the Michigan Weights and Measures Act, 1964 Public Act 283.
“We’ve now checked over 200 bags of mulch products produced by UMS taken from stores across the state with only 14 containing the declared net content and with the vast majority being grossly short,” said Jamie Clover Adams, MDARD director. “UMS is selling a product that doesn’t contain the amount of mulch claimed on the bag. The Stop-Use and Stop-Removal order ensures Michigan consumers and businesses alike are getting what they pay for and ensures a fair marketplace.”
MDARD has determined that mulch manufactured, packaged, and/or distributed by UMS prior to April 16, 2014 does not contain the amount of product represented on the label. The Stop-Use and Stop-Removal order prohibiting the sale, offering for sale, or use of the above listed mulch products, packaged and/or distributed by UMS. These products should no longer be used, immediately be removed from store shelves or other product displays, and no longer offered for sale.
The Stop-Use and Stop-Removal order prohibit the sale, offering for sale the following UMS mulch products:
Longer Lasting Absolute Red #1931, 1.5 cubic feet Longer Lasting Absolute Black #1951, 1.5 cubic feet Pro's Choice Premium Cyprus #111, 1.5 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Absolute Black #1952, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Absolute Brown #1982, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Absolute Gold #1902, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Absolute Red #1922, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Cedar Mulch #212, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Pine Bark Mulch #302, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Playmat Wood Fiber #1572, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Golden Trophy Premium Cyprus Blend #112, 2 cubic feet Pro's Choice Positively Black #1952PB, 2 cubic feet
