April 16: Live Webinar on Recent Wind Energy Technology Advances

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “Recent Wind Technology Advances” on Wednesday, April 16, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.  Owen Roberts, an engineer at the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will present on the current state of turbine technology, new resource assessment methodology, and new state wind maps developed using these methods. Simon Mahan of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy will discuss the impact that modern and future turbines may have on the Southeast and lessons learned from ongoing projects. Aaron Barr from MAKE Consulting will discuss the future of low-wind-speed technology, current technology trends, and projections for the future.

April 17: Live Webinar on Fuel Cells at NASCAR

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “Fuel Cells at NASCAR” on Thursday, April 17, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Presented by NASCAR and Acumentrics, this webinar will focus on the use of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) generators for powering broadcast cameras for NASCAR. Recently, Acumentrics Corporation completed a field test program with NASCAR to replace small portable gasoline generators with SOFC units that use commercial propane. These generators demonstrated considerable fuel savings and emission reductions compared with the standard solution, while providing reduced noise and vibration. With these attributes, the units have proven to be a viable power alternative for broadcasting needs for a host of different applications. During the webinar, presenters will compare this latest-generation power solution with conventional generators and explore lessons learned and potential paths forward.

May 21: Live Webcast on the 2014 Farm Bill's Renewable Energy for America Program

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “The 2014 Farm Bill's Renewable Energy for America Program” on Wednesday, May 21, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants and loan guarantees to farmers, ranchers, and rural small businesses and electric cooperatives to install energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. During the webinar, Andy Olsen, a senior policy advocate for the Environmental Law and Policy Center, will describe the funding allocated to REAP in 2014, eligible recipients and technologies, application deadlines, and how to submit a complete application. In addition, Charles Newcomb, director of technology for Endurance Wind Power, will provide an industry perspective on the Farm Bill.

April 3: Live Webinar on Climate Change Impacts and Indian Country: Disaster Response and Recovery

The Energy Department presented a live webinar titled “Climate Change Impacts and Indian Country: Disaster Response and Recovery” on Thursday, April 3.  The webinar covered the primary efforts of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate, assess, and mitigate the impacts of climate change on their disaster recovery and response programs. Under the Stafford Act, Tribes are eligible to receive direct assistance from FEMA and can learn from FEMA and others’ efforts as they assess, plan, and implement their own disaster response and recovery plans to address climate change impacts on their communities. This webinar was the first in the four-part “Climate Change Impacts and Indian Country” webinar series.

April 3: Live Webinar on New Developments in Federal Building Energy Efficiency Standards

The Energy Department presented a live webinar titled “New Developments in Federal Building Energy Efficiency Standards” on Thursday, April 3. During the webinar, attendees learned about legislative drivers relative to ASHRAE standards and which buildings fall under each standard. The webinar also covered major changes in the most recent versions of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code, and helped participants understand the actual requirements of the standards, where to look for conservation measures, and how to determine if a building meets them.
