Negotiating a Relocation Package
// Dallas, Texas, United States // Attorney Keith Clouse (Press Release) // Keith Clouse
Many executives who take new jobs out of town negotiate relocation packages. Keith Clouse, a Dallas employment lawyer who drafts employment and separation agreements for executives, believes that an executive negotiating a relocation package should:
1. Identify what forms of assistance are available. Some companies have standard relocation policies. These may vary depending on the city the person is moving to and the person’s position within the company.
2. Identify what the individual’s needs are. A physician who just graduated from medical school may only need to be reimbursed for the moving van. A seasoned executive may need more services, such as help selling her former home, help in finding a school for her special needs child, and job search assistance for her spouse.
3. Be flexible. The goal should be to reach an agreement that satisfies both parties. For example, if the company needs the executive’s services immediately, he may need to commute for a few months before his family joins him.
